Innovative radiotherapy

Introduction
Radiotherapy is a technique that can be used separately or in combination with other treatments, e.g. surgery, chemotherapy and immunotherapy, in the treatment of cancer. Radiotherapy is used for several purposes: (1) to cure the patient (curative radiotherapy), (2) to reduce the risk of relapse after surgery (adjuvant or supplementary radiotherapy), (3) to simplify surgery and/or improve its outcomes (enhancing neoadjuvant or prior radiotherapy), or (4) to reduce symptoms when no more treatment is possible (palliative radiotherapy).
The ‘innovative radiotherapy’ registration project evaluated promising innovative radiotherapy techniques in which tumours are irradiated very precisely with a high dose and for a limited number of sessions.

Objective
The main objective of this registration project was to find out under what conditions and at what fee the innovative radiotherapy techniques Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) and Accelerated Partial Breast Irradiation (APBI) could be included in the nomenclature of medical services. The condition for charging for these services was mandatory registration with the Belgian Cancer Registry (BCR). The mandatory data were registered between 2013 and 2019.

Financial support and partners
This registration project was run in collaboration with the RIZIV.
